A Parenting Question
2005/10/27,13:20

Now I am not a prent, but I do have a question for those of you who are. I babysit for a little boy about two. Sometimes he likes to take rides in the car, but more often than not, he gets very cranky. Whne he gets cranky, he likes to call people stupid, tell them to shut up, and he also spits. Under normal circumstances, when he misbehaves, I can put him in his crib for a nap, or make him sit on the couch for a few minutes. This usually make the behavior stop. But what do you do when you are driving in the car? When we tell him he needs to stop, it makes him spit more, but if we ignore the behavior we are just allowing him to keep spitting and it is some time before he decised to stop, and not only is he spitting on the seats, he also spits on the other passengers of the car.

Does anyone have any advice?

lol, I suppose your right, and diverting his attention might work, maybe if I talk about one of his favorite movies, monsters inc. that could work. thanks.

Have you tried diverting his attention by pointing at something out of the window or going "hey, I just remembered something I forgot to tell you" .... or just about anything that will make him forget he's feeling cranky? It sounds too easy but it usually works with my 4 year old ! Oh and just remember, that's why they call them the terrible twos - sometimes nothing will work and you just have to wait until he grows out of it !!! ;-)

That might actually work, becasue he hates being in the car, lol, I wonder why I didn't think of that before. Thanks.

I'm not a parent either, but I babysit a three year old boy who's similar. Sometimes children can just be stubborn... but whenever Donovan (the boy I babysit) starts acting like that, I tell him that if he keeps it up he's going to have to stay in the car while I go in the store or wherever we're going. I never actually leave him in the car; I never have to and even if it did get down to that I wouldn't. But... it usually works.
